New Zealand Fire & Safety Officials Claim Smoke Alarms As Important As Seatbelts

Fire Department in Auckland, New Zealand have issued notices to residents stating that smoke alarms are just as important as seatbelts. Officials said that although having working smoke alarms is not a legal requirement, they are just as important for the safety of people, as seatbelts are. Senior fire risk management officer of the Auckland Fire Region George Stephens said that having properly functioning smoke alarms in every home is a must. He pointed out that the potential consequence of neglecting either, smoke alarms or seatbelts were the same; either deep injury or untimely death. Officials also said that people should test their smoke and fire alarms carefully and make sure they are functional, so that any risk of being injured in a house fire is taken out.
